Imagery Rehearsal Therapy: rewriting a nightmare

Imagery Rehearsal Therapy, developed by Barry Krakow and colleagues, is a simple idea with strong evidence behind it. While awake and feeling safe, you write down a recurring nightmare, change it in any way you like, then picture the new version for a few minutes each day.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends it for nightmare disorder.

How Imagery Rehearsal Therapy works

How Undreamt uses it

After a distressing nightmare, we offer grounding first, then gentle prompts to rewrite the ending. If nightmares keep returning, we'll suggest speaking to a professional. Undreamt is not a treatment.
